Companies Are All About Their People

After graduating from university, I joined Toppan Moore (now TOPPAN Edge) as a new graduate, and over the past 39 years I had worked in a wide variety of fields, including human resources, labor relations, corporate sales, head office building construction project, risk management, information security, and global business.

What I learned in the Human Resources Department after joining the company is that "A company is all about its people”.

Management is said to be an activity that combines people, goods, money, and information as management resources, and the most important resource is people. While goods, money, and information are only “1 + 1 = 2”, in the case of people, 1 + 1 can be 3 or 4. This concept is at the origin of my thinking.

Identifying Needs and Proposal-Based Sales

During my days in charge of sales, I found it interesting to gain clients’ trust, understand their needs, and develop proposals that met those needs. The joy and sense of accomplishment I felt when I succeeded in winning an order was irreplaceable.

Challenge to the Unknown - Head Office Building Construction Project

I was also convinced that in a head office building construction project, a task that no one in the company had ever experienced before, I can always reach the goal, no matter how difficult the path, with logical thinking and "abundant common sense" as well as the continuous ability to persevere to the end.

The Age of VUCA and Risk Management

On the other hand, the environment surrounding corporate management is changing at a dizzying pace and is difficult to predict, as we are now in the age of VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity).

In this environment, I faced numerous incidents and emergencies such as natural disasters, cyber-attacks, system failures and so on, but I have overcome them each time. This is because I not only managed risks appropriately by daily implementing the PDCA cycle, but also demonstrated my ability to act quickly when the time came.

I believe that my experience in risk management, including information security, has given me the weapons necessary to survive in the tough age like this.

Corporate Management, Japan, and SMEC

When I was Operating Officer and General Manager of the Global Business Division, I also served as President of a holding company that managed overseas subsidiaries and affiliates, and was in charge of management from a position covering the entire Asia-Pacific market, which was both a heavy responsibility and very rewarding.

Furthermore, what I have learned through my two overseas assignments is that Japan and Japanese companies have many good points, which are highly valued and attractive to people overseas.

In particular, I believe that Japan's "artisan craftsmanship" is not only world-class, but that there are countless companies that can become No. 1 in the world.

With this experience as a background, I have come to believe that I want to work more in corporate management, and that I want to sell more of Japan to the world.

And, I have come to realize that my country is Japan only where small and medium-sized enterprises, which account for more than 99% of the total number of companies in this country, should be more vibrant and active.

In order to give form to this desire and insight, I chose the path of a SMEC (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Management Consultant).

My Strength

Tsukuru Samejima

My strength is to provide consulting services that combine expertise and skills in multiple fields based on my management experience.

For example, in "Overseas Expansion x Risk Management," I propose appropriate management methods for overseas operations, assuming negative impacts that are unimaginable according to common sense in Japan.

In "Corporate Sales x Human Resources/Labor Relations," I show you how to promote sales management that can improve business performance while motivating the people in charge.

I believe that such "multiplication" creates a synergistic effect that enables me to provide a broader and deeper range of advice and proposals to my corporate clients' management.

Focus on the Realities

At the same time, I believe that it is always the actual field that tells the truth. It is most important to be onsite, to see the actual things, and to understand the reality, in other words, to consider and implement specific measures based on "The Sangen Principle (The Three Realities Philosophy)".

I will be able to find out something by seeing things on the site that I could not realize only by analyzing on the desk. That is why I never give up and continue to work on it in an unsophisticated manner in order to find a feasible solution. I sincerely hope to be of service to you as a management consultant of that style, sometimes rolling up my sleeves and getting into the field to sweat with you.
